Since March 2016 I tested 85 different pairs of AA and 64 different pairs of AAA cells.
2021 was, yet again, a boring year with no improvements in capacity or cycle life. The 2019’s finding of FDK HR-AAULT passed 2160 cycles and is still going strong. Let’s see how far it gets.
In 2021 I simplified the way I calculate the average capacity. It used to be the weighted average until the cell drops to 80% of its initial capacity and utill it reaches 100 mOhm (200 mOhm for AAA cells). Now it’s just the average capacity until the AA cell reaches 200 mOhm of internal impedance (500 mOhm for AAA cells).
One observation I made in 2021: NiMH cells age consideratly. A fresh good cell will perform wors after 2 years of shelf life. It does not make sense to buy and shelve NiMH cells, it’s better to buy them fresh when you need them.
